A little weekend getaway

A HISTORIC TOWN

  

Using CFSA's (Carolina Farm Stewardship Association) 2010 Commercial Organic Production Conference as an excuse to drive to the East Coast, we drove to New Bern, the second oldest town in North Carolina.  New Bern's city flag honors the mother-daughter relationship with Berne, Switzerland.  

 

RIVER TOWN

 

New Bern is situated at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers.

 

THREE HUNDRED YEARS

 

2010 marks 300 years since New Bern was founded.  To celebrate, forty-four sculptured, fiberglass Bears, bears were created decorated by local artists.  Camille stands next to "TaBearna" and the patriotic "Flag Bearer" stands outside the courthouse. 

 

UNBEARABLY CUTE BEARS EVERYWHERE

 

We found the cutest bears everywhere we walked, including the "Har-Bear Town Racquet Cub" and "Neuseopoly" Bear which was sponsored by Neuse Realty.  More about these fanciful bears at Bear Town Bears.

 

SIREN CALL OF THE SEA 

 

The real reason we decided to make this trip was that it put us within striking distance of the Atlantic Ocean.  After a great breakfast at the Harmony House Bed and Breakfast, we drove over to pay our respects.  Both Bob and Camille spent their childhood years on the coast and feel the need to touch salt water once in awhile.
